Why RPG Fans Should Be Excited For Flintlock

Flintlock Is The Ideal Follow-Up To Elden Ring DLC

While there’s not too much known aboutFlintlock’s story and world, the game’s promotional material makes it out to be a sprawling RPG that’s oozing Steampunk energy. Described as a “Souls-lite” by A44, players will take on the role of Nor Vanek, a member of the Coalition Army, as they set out on a journey across the land to slay a series of gods that have flooded the world with undead monstrosities. Nor has a variety of weapons at her disposal, including the titular flintlock firearm that should combo well with the more standard close-quarters melee tools such as a small axe. Nor is also not going into battle alone, as she will be accompanied by Enki, a Fox God companion who will also provide her with magical abilities to even the odds in combat and assist in navigating the game world.

The other reasonElden Ringfans should bepaying close attention toFlintlockis thatA44 Games is also the studio that created the award-winning SoulslikeAshen. WhileAshenwas unfortunately hampered by its limited enemy variety, it’s still regarded as one of the best attempts at recapturing FromSoftware’s magic, and with over half a decade having passed since its release, A44 has had plenty of time to perfect this formula over the course ofFlintlock’s development.

Ashenmay have been a much more straightforward RPG than many of FromSoftware’s games. However, it’s still an excellent example of competent combat and world design with a stunning aesthetic to boot, albeit one that is removed from that ofFlintlock’s due to its slightly more cartoonish artstyle. According toScreen Rant’s time playing the gameat Summer Game Fest 2024,Flintlock’s aestheticfeels more reminiscent of titles likeForspokenthan some of the bleaker lands found in FromSoftware’s games, blending elements of a more ancient society with more vibrant hues that paint the picture of a world that could have been thriving before becoming dominated by the hordes of the undead.
