X/Twitter is set to remove DMs entirely soon – but might replace them with new feature
X (formerly Twitter) is set to remove the Direct Messages (DMs) feature, according to an X software engineer. However, leaks point to a new feature, X Chat, coming in its place.
In a post published on X, Warunek said on April 16, “the whole entire DM’s will be gone soon” – a major change in how users will communicate privately on the platform.

No, not like request messages but like the whole entire DM’s will be gone soon
The response came to a question about the message requests feature, but according to Warunek, the whole DM feature itself will cease to exist.

XChat could replace DMs
The change appears to be part of a broader effort to reimagine X as an all-in-one app, a vision that owner Elon Musk has pushed.
Instead of DMs, it looks as though users will soon be introduced to a new feature called “XChat,” which has been uncovered through recent leaks by app researchers.

Nothing is official yet, but screenshots shared by nima_owji reveal what appears to be a dedicated chat interface called “XChat”. This would replace the existing Messages tab in the app’s sidebar.

Another X employee further clarified that the DM feature will still exist, but it’s being “rewritten.”
it’s a rewrite, not getting rid of the feature
This revamp aligns with Musk’s earlier declaration on X he personally would eventually lose his phone number and use X instead for calls and messages.
In a few months, I will discontinue my phone number and only use X for texts and audio/video calls
It also aligns with his ambition to makeX into a so-called ‘everything app,’which could include payments, media sharing, and more advanced AI features.
