The Energon Universe Features The Return Of Shockwave’s Classic Alt-Mode

It would make sense if Megatron were to return to his Walther alt-mode in the Energon Universe, given that this new continuity has largely been deferential towards the G1 era.

The size-changing aspect of the Cybertronians from the original G1Transformerscontinuity came about due to the inclusion of the Microchange Japanese toyline made by Takara, in which objects such as cameras or tape decks transformed into tiny robots. In order to explain how a robot that transforms from a handgun could believably fight one who transforms from a tanker-truck, the concept of size-changing was introduced in theTransformersfranchise, allowing the much larger robotas to shrink as they transformed into smaller objects.

Editor Ben Abernathy refers to this as “Mass Conversion” in theTransformers#9 letters page, which allows Cybertronians to rearrange their entire molecular structures. The confirmation from Abernathy that size-changing exists in the Energon Universe leaves the door open for Megatron’s original alt-mode to feature in the new continuity.

Shockwave transforming into his original alt-modein the Energon Universeopens up the possibility of Megatron’s alt-mode returning to his G1 roots, once the character returns to lead the Decepticons once more. Restrictions on toy guns resulted in Hasbro changing Megatron’s alt-mode from a handgun to a tank when the brand was resurrected in the 1990s asTransformers: Generation 2. The Decepticon leader has often been recast as a tank, fighter jet or other kind of spaceship throughout the years, rarely going back to the original handgun for various reasons.
