AfterTop Gun: Maverickpremiered in May 2022 to massive box office and critical success, I put off watching it for a while. It was nothing personal. COVID was still lingering. I didn’t want to go to a theater, I actually didn’t have much of an attachment toTop Gun… And then a friend of a friend said, “I think if everyone sees this movie, America will be healed.”
While America did not heal thanks to one 2-hour and 10-minute movie, if any movie could do that, it would beTop Gun: Maverick. A thrill ride with fantastic performances,it was one of my favorite recent film experiences. As a Philadelphia native, I have a special place in my heart forMiles Teller performances, who grew up just outside the city. His turn as Rooster is excellent, and I’d like to call out two scenes as particularly memorable: when he plays “Great Balls of Fire” at the bar and dances during the iconic beach football game.

Instead of volleyball, the new Top Gun trainees are shown in a montage playing football as OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried” plays. One sequence seesRooster doing a goofy shimmy while wearing jean shorts, which I think are only slightly more comfortable than playing volleyball in full-length jeans. Of course, the dance move, only a few seconds long, immediately went viral, and you started seeing it everywhere. It defined the summer of 2022.

With the huge success ofTop Gun: Maverick,Top Gun 3seemed an inevitability. The third film in the franchise was confirmed in January 2024 with Tom Cruise attached. As long as Tom Cruise is in, I’m game, but I would be that much happier if my Philadelphia Phillies fan, Miles Teller, is also part of the film. Back in 2022, when asked aboutTop Gun 3, Teller only toldEntertainment Tonight,
“That would be great, but that’s all up to TC [Tom Cruise]. It’s all up to Tom. I’ve been having some conversations with him about it. We’ll see.”
Since then, Teller has kept mum about a sequel toTop Gun: Maverick, but it’s been reported thatTeller and Glen Powell will be returning alongside Cruise.
