The trailer forThe Front Roomis deliciously eerie, providing a great balance of horror and familial strain, which are sometimes one and the samein this film. If the trailer is any indication, theA24 horror moviewill make use of heavy religious themes and imagery, which is seen in the trailer through the twisted Nativity-esque scene towards the end. The trailer also sees Brandy’s character referring to the mother-in-law (played by Hunter) as a “racist,” hinting toward the broader sociopolitical tensions that may be at play inThe Front Room.
As a distributor, A24 has a knack for finding films that have similar themes toThe Front Room, which bodes well for it. A24’sHereditary, for instance, remains one of the most beloved in their oeuvre, which similarly follows a maternal figure whose insanity is just about as chilling as any jump scare. Last year, the studio put outTalk to Me, a widely-acclaimed and smash-hit horror film.
