Summary
Supervive- previously known asProject Loki- is an upcoming squad-based shooter that blends battle royale, sandbox, and strategy mechanics for an innovative competitive experience. It’s the debut release from Theorycraft Games, which was founded by a team of developers that has previously worked on titles likeDestiny,Valorant, andLeague of Legends. With an emphasis on mastery and round-to-round variance,Supervivetouts the goal of being a “10,000-hour game” for players.
Supervivedraws inspiration frommany of its creators' past projectswhile also forging its own unique identity. The game’s main mode centers on 10 teams of four players competing across a slowly shrinking map, using physics-based combat and upgradeable powers until only one group is left standing. A recent hands-on play session that featured multiple matches with blended teams of developers and press served as a great showcase of the game’s creative chaos, and what players can expect from the eventual release.

Battle royale games, while not as popular as they were in the early 2000s, still have some solid entries to enjoy, some of which are free-to-play.

Detailed Move Sets & Diverse Roles Characterize Supervive
There are currently 15 playable characters inSupervive, with more slated for release over time. They’re split into three main categories, each one of which has a primary attack, four abilities, and a passive: the damage-focused fighter, which range from gun toters to wielders of powers like electricity; protector, which has team-helping abilities like healing; and controller, which focuses on disruptive, more AOE-centric moves. Though there are character categories,Supervivedoesn’t mandate players to take on any certain roles within a team- a squad could be entirely one type of hunter and still have a chance at success.
Each hunter has a difficulty level on a scale of one to four, which represents how complex their particular move sets are to utilize. Even in my few hours with the game, the potential mastery elements interwoven into it were evident. Getting better at nailing down move sets and properly timing them proved to be very satisfying, like a combo for the electricity wielder where enemies are loaded with static charge and then accrue massive damage when dashed through, as did learning how different hunters work best together, making it easy to see how players could sink hours intoSupervive.

Every Match Is Different In Supervive
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work In Cooperative Tactics
Though the fundamental main areas of the large world map - which is entirely set high above the clouds - remain the same, each match inSupervivehas several variables that can make it different, beginning with where the group chooses to drop at the start. There’s also the chance of rolling one of several Storm Shifts, which are extra attributes like roving storms or high-speed trains, which can be deadly but offer great transportation. Once the match begins, the items and gear players pick up can massively impact in-game moments as well, from healing food to powerful weapons.
Teamwork is paramount inSupervive, which features a built-in voice chat system for better coordination. There are basic team tactics like backing one another up in a fight, but there are also certain characters that synergize with each other in creative ways - a common combination was the usage of one character’s teleport ability with another’s AOE strike, which was great for unleashing surprise damage against other teams. Each match also had several chaotic moments - like people accidentally falling off cliffs or walking into severely-overpowered situations - that madechatting with other team members while playingincredibly entertaining.

Unlike many online multiplayer games, players aren’t knocked out permanently after being felled by a monster or opponent, and can be revived through multiple different methods, like other team members or the activation of special beacons. This can lead to some truly impressive comeback moments, and makes the game feel like the scales could tip at any time. Something similar can be said about the game’s many abilities that can be picked up over the course of a match, with everything from traps to buildable fortifications able to easily turn the tides.
Final Thoughts On Supervive
Entertaining Chaos From Competitive Game Experts
The blended experience of the development team means thatSupervivehas managed to avoid many of theclichés of genres like MOBAsand squad-based shooters from which it draws inspiration. While it has clear DNA from a myriad of them, the hybrid created is something that genuinely sets itself apart in a landscape filled to the brim with hero shooters. Though the idea of a 10,000-hour game sounds like a lofty goal, the game’s easy entry point coupled with a high ceiling for true mastery makes it sound quite plausible.
The full timeline forSuperviveisn’t public just yet, but players will have the chance to get their hands on an early build of the game this year, with a playtest scheduled to begin later this month and an open beta planned for some time in 2024. While a final version may be a long way off, even the early days of the title show great promise. The team’s passion for creating chaotic competition and engaging gameplay is clear in every facet ofSupervive, and in turn creates an environment where it’s truly easy to have fun.
Supervive’s next playtest will run from June 27 to July 4, which players can register for on thegame’s website. The title is slated to enter open beta in late 2024.
