Ramyseason 4 gets an encouraging update from creator and star Ramy Youssef two years after the season 3 finale. Centering on Ramy Hassan (Youssef) and his family by delving into their lives and experiences as a Muslim American family living in New Jersey, the A24-produced dramedy has helped to define Hulu and highlight standout talents both in front of and behind the camera. But as the cast and crew have taken on other projects, it remains a question mark as to when the Golden Globe-winning show willreturn for season 4.
In a recent interview on Variety’sAwards Circutpodcast, Youssef briefly addressed the status ofRamyseason 4. He acknowledged that the writers and actors strikes of 2023 had an impact on delaying the series. Youssef, who created the show with Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch, encouragingly went on to say thatHulu remains open to picking up the show for one or two seasons whenever the time is right.In the quote below, Youssef also touches onRamy’s long history with Hulu and mentions that it was put in development beforeThe Handmaid’s Taleeven premiered on the streaming service:
We were a little bit ambiguous about how we were going to do more Ramy episodes. Then I think the strike really put us in a spot where we said, ‘Okay, this is something that we kind of want to probably just pick up at a different time.’ So that’s something that like, I’m excited to, at some point, call them and be like, ‘Hey, I want to.’ They know the vision of like, what could feel like the last season, maybe even kind of like a two-part season type thing. And they were just kind of like, ‘Alright, let’s just pick it up when it’s the right time and you’re ready.’
I got that little, like—the door’s here. That’s what, you know, I really appreciate from them too. Because, you know, when I first did the development deal, for Ramy, they hadn’t even put out Handmaid’s Tale.
Ramy Season 4 Has A Lot Of Story Potential
But Even Without It, The Show Has Accomplished So Much
As was the case with the series overall,Ramyseason 3’s endingcould serve as a fitting conclusion to the show but it also leaves room for further exploration. Still, even if the Hulu show doesn’t return, it has accomplished a lot in highlighting everyday stories about Muslims and the way those stories aren’t drastically different from anyone else’s. The show has also done a great deal to spotlight talents that may not otherwise get a chance to appear in a prestige streaming series.
May Calamawy, who plays Ramy’s on-screen sister Dana, has left a big impression onMoon Knightin the role of Layla El-Faouly / Scarlet Scarab. The show has also given space to veteran actors like Hiam Abbass and Amr Waked, as Ramy’s parents, with performances that are both hilarious and heartbreaking. Abbass' performance, in particular, serves as a nice counterpart to her steelySuccessioncharacter. The show has changed a lot for Youssef as well, with the Golden Globe winner having a prominent supporting role in the Oscar-winningPoor Things, hostingSNL, and headlining the well-received HBO stand-up specialMore Feelings.
Youssef and his collaborators have worked to elevate other projects featuring voices from the Arab and disabled communities. Mohammed Amer, who recurs onRamy, debuted his own Netflix comedy show about his experiences as a Palestinian refugee. It has drawnraves from Steven Spielbergand will return for season 2. Steve Way, another co-star of Youssef’s, has been mentioned as working on his own series. Though the busy cast and crew means delaying the acclaimed Hulu comedy, it’s a good reason to wait.
