Summary
I’m a huge fan ofGodzilla Minus One, and I’d love to see the director of the newGodzillafilm take over the MonsterVerse franchise now.Godzilla Minus Oneis the bestGodzillamovie that has been released in years, and compared to the mixed bag of the MonsterVerse’sGodzillamovies,Godzilla Minus Oneis in an entirely different league. So, if the MonsterVerse wants to have its best future, it should respond to the success ofGodzilla Minus Oneby handing the reins over to the film’s director Takashi Yamazaki.
Godzilla Minus Onewas one of the biggest surprises of its release year for me, as it managed to not only stand out from the crowd ofGodzillamovies, but it also managed to stand out from the kaiju genre as a whole. 2023’sGodzilla Minus Onewas a record-breaking box office hit, it was critically acclaimed, andit was even nominated at the Academy Awards, showing just how much of a success the film was. Compared to the MonsterVerse,Godzilla Minus Onefares much better, meaning that there is one logical path forward for the franchise.

Godzilla Minus One Is Better Than Any Monsterverse Movie Thanks To Takashi Yamazaki
He’s The Reason That It Is So Good
Although I do love somemovies in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, such asKong: Skull Islandand the 2014Godzillafilm,Godzilla Minus Oneis better than any of them. It’s hard to argue that any of the MonsterVerse’sGodzillafilms are even comparable to the quality ofGodzilla Minus One, and this is all thanks to Takashi Yamazaki. While the MonsterVerse’s movies are more concerned with setting up and maintaining a cinematic universe, Yamazaki’s take onGodzillafeels like a true piece of art, one that understands the best way that Godzilla can be used.
Yamazaki nails the portrayal of Godzilla, with it making the titan truly terrifying for the first time in a long while. I felt true dread when Godzilla was charging up his atomic breath inGodzilla Minus One, whereas in the MonsterVerse I don’t feel much of anything.

Yamazaki also managed to nail the portrayal of the film’s human characters, making them just as interesting as the monster while also using them to tell a compelling story with complex themes. The focus on the humans is one of my biggest criticisms with the MonsterVerse, butGodzilla Minus Onemakes me want to see more of them.

Takashi Yamazaki Can Take Over The Monsterverse After Adam Wingard’s Exit
The Next Movie Already Needs A Director
While replacing the heads of the MonsterVerse with Takashi Yamazaki may seem like a difficult move, there is no better time than now. Adam Wingard is the director behindGodzilla vs. KongandGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with him being considered the singular visionary behind the modern chapters of the MonsterVerse. Despite this,Adam Wingard will not be directing the sequel toGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and since the MonsterVerse franchise will undoubtedly continue without him, it isn’t known who the new director will be.
AlthoughAdam Wingard’s exit fromGodzilla x Kong 2has been concerningfor some, these concerns can be eased by bringing Takashi Yamazaki into the franchise. Yamazaki has already proven that he can make goodGodzillamovies, withGodzilla Minus Onebeing even better than Wingard’s films. With the director chair empty, it seems like the logical move to give Yamazaki a shot at an even bigger-scale kaiju movie, allowing him the opportunity to directGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s sequel if he wants.

The Monsterverse Would Be Better Off With Takashi Yamazaki Than Competing Against Him
It Is Only Positive For The Monsterverse
Bringing inTakashi Yamazaki would raise the quality of the MonsterVerse’s films, but it would also have another major benefit to the franchise. Although nothing has been officially announced, the success of the first film makes asequel toGodzilla Minus Onelikely. Yamazaki has already expressed interest in returning for a sequel, meaning that the MonsterVerse would have to compete with Yamazaki’s next film.
Rather than having two simultaneousGodzillaseries compete with each other, I think that it would be better to condense things, as the MonsterVerse will lose the quality competition withGodzilla Minus One 2. Although it would be entirely up to Yamazaki to join the MonsterVerse, if he wants to do so, I say let him have it. Yamazaki’s inclusion would only benefit the MonsterVerse, hopefully bringing it closer to the quality ofGodzilla Minus One.
