Summary
Following years of languishing in development hell, Doug Liman offers an encouraging update onEdge of Tomorrow 2. Liman previously teamed withTom Cruise for the 2014 adaptationof the Japanese novelAll You Need Is Kill, in which Cruise starred as a military public affairs officer who becomes stuck in a time loop in a future in which aliens have invaded Earth and are slowly winning the war against humanity, but uses the looping to find a way to beat them. Though garnering rave reviews from critics,Edge of Tomorrowwas only viewed a modest box office hit, which has partly complicated sequel plans.
Now, during an interview withTotal Filmfor his upcoming action-comedyThe Instigators, Liman was asked about the long journey to makingEdge of Tomorrow 2. Though not indicating where in the development process the sci-fi sequel might be, he did assure thatWarner Bros. is “constantly” asking about when it will happen, making for an exciting update on the follow-up. Check out what Liman shared below:

I do think there’s probably no better compliment to a movie than people wanting for there to be a sequel. Road House - there’s call for a sequel. Edge of Tomorrow, there’s no better compliment than Warner Bros. constantly bringing up, “Will you go and make another one of these?”

The biggest hurdle forEdge of Tomorrow 2to get off the ground thus far has proven to be boththe financial logistics and busy schedules of Cruise and co-star Emily Bluntin making the sequel. Additionally, Cruise and Blunt remain in high demand for a variety of projects, including the former’sMission: Impossiblefranchise, which is currently filming its eighth movie, and the latter having been busy with theQuiet Placemovies, her Oscar-nominated turn inOppenheimerand the Ryan Gosling co-starringThe Fall Guy.
Aside from Liman’s encouraging update on the sequel, though,Edge of Tomorrow 2might just finally happen thanks toCruise’s recent partnership deal with Warner Bros. Discoveryand his production banner, TC Productions. Early reports indicated that the sci-fi sequel was expected to be a main point of discussion between the two shortly after the deal was signed. Though nothing more concrete has come out since, Cruise already has lined up another starring project with the studio in a new film helmed byThe Revenant’s Alejandro G. Iñárritu, indicating a positive future for Cruise at WB that could lead toEdge of Tomorrow 2.
